Three Baker Elementary School classes won “Top Classrooms of the Month” for the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks “Reading Is Cool” program. Mrs. Vicky Cuellar’s 1st grade class, Ms. Alyssia Cetinich’s 1st/2nd grade Special Day Class (SDC), and Ms. Erica Paisley’s 5th grade class all received visits from Sharkie, the San Jose Sharks mascot.

Several Moreland School District teachers have been awarded Innovation Grants through the Moreland Education Foundation (MEF) Small Grants Program.

Two Moreland Middle School students were honored Tuesday night with the “Miracle Mile Optimist Club of Campbell” award. Eighth graders Sarah Coleman and Aarushi Wadhwa were recognized for their school and community service.

Easterbrook Discovery School’s (EDS) Junior Varsity and Varsity Middle School Boys Volleyball teams have gone on to win the West Valley Athletic League’s Middle School Championship. Both teams ended the season with a 9 - 1 record, claiming the first team championships for the EDS after school sports programs.

Easterbrook Discovery School (EDS) has opened their brand new STEAM lab for the 2017/2018 school year. The STEAM lab provides four elective course options for the middle school students: Visual Arts, Engineering, Coding, or Environmental Science in the Moreland Woods.

Payne Elementary School has been recognized as a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. Announced nationally, Payne is one of 342 schools chosen in the country, and the only school chosen in Santa Clara County to be recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School under the National Blue Ribbon honors.

The third year of results for the new California state assessment system, known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), were released from the California Department of Education this morning for all schools. Moreland has maintained consistency in both English Language Arts and Math that demonstrates how Moreland students are continuing to thrive with the new, more rigorous, college and career-ready California standards through the Smarter Balanced Assessment Test taken last Spring.

Three schools have focused their lessons or school-wide events toward teaching students about empathy and the need to help those affected by the most recent hurricanes. Baker and Easterbrook Discovery School classrooms have student-led hurricane relief efforts, and Payne Elementary School will supplement their annual Book Fair with a Book Drive for hurricane-affected schools.

Moreland Middle School English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for English Learner students, Shanna Urbancic, has been selected as one of three teachers to represent Santa Clara County at the California State Teacher of the Year competition.
