Latimer School Garden Featured on KTVU Channel 2 News

The Moreland School District campus was highlighted in KTVU’s Cool School segment.

San Jose, CA, October 10, 2023 - Latimer School educators, students and volunteers were featured in KTVU’s Cool School segment on Monday, October 9, 2023. Reporter Frank Mallicoat visited Latimer last month and interviewed several students, Principal Hilary Gill, 4th grade teacher Helma Lee, along with volunteers Amy Cody and Boris Wolf, about the Latimer School Garden and Outside Classroom.

The garden started in 2020 and has grown into a popular spot on campus among students and staff, and features 60 varieties of fruits, herbs, flowers and vegetables.

“We are thrilled to see Moreland schools highlighted for their innovative teaching practices,” said Superintendent Dr. Clover Codd. “Latimer School has fostered a welcoming learning environment and is a great example of educating and empowering the whole child.”

Mrs. Lee’s fourth grade class was featured in the story as they engaged in a lesson involving weighing and measuring one of the large pumpkins recently grown in the garden.

“We’re a project-based learning school at Latimer. We like to give our kids hands-on opportunities. And what a better hands-on opportunity than coming out in the garden and planting, harvesting and finding out about the bugs and the creatures that live here,” said Principal Hilary Gill.

I knew at 6:30 a recent study by the Journal of landscape and urban planning found gardening increases happiness productivity and reduces stress so it's no surprise the Latimer School in San Jose was listening Waco Texas gardening at this week's cool school Farmers Market put over 3,300 square feet of garden goodness Atlanta mirrors K through 8th graders are eating it up I cannot find here and I can do what I like to do since I really like to Garden The Oasis pack with 60 varieties flowers Birds fruits and veggies from Vine ripe tomatoes and string beans and peppers and pumpkins volunteer parrot Sandy Cody and Boris wolf Planet the lad Amir garden seed back in 2020 from inspiration from teacher Helm Alee and it is since exploded from a humble bunch of Miss Lee's veggie pots in a Mother Nature's Classroom having the kids come to the garden and they love the garden. floor they come with questions they come with theories about things they can test out their theories it's so fun to see you know what interest particular kids or tea inches notebooks is just a stress-free environment to let students be kids but make no mistake these kids are learning all this day a little mad as they weighed in on the Great I love it we love it we love teasing from the garden wheel of collecting insects at wheel of observing in the garden and we try to get out here as much as we can wear a project-based learning call here at Latimer we like to give our Kids Hands-On opportunities and what a better Hands-On opportunity than coming out to the garden and planting and harvesting finding out about the bugs and the creatures that live here yes for some it's all about the bugs. Scariest creatures don't take my word for it you seems like orange butterflies got it right with black spot those are the butterflies of these little creatures it's fun to find the praying mantises with butterflies caterpillars there's one that is not a principle silly name it's called Dinosaur Kale or learning have you ever heard of Dinosaur Kale me either a dinosaur T-Rex is it taste good it takes. It taste good cuz one time I brought home and we had a salad and I do really good really good Rampage in an army of over 40 volunteers Doug the green tea it's here to stay the benefits are just too many to count including the produce a different and they take the tiny bit better and I think that's just something about growing your own vegetables and seeing them grow and harvesting them and and basically making your own food Frank Bella code KTVU Fox 2 News
