Selected Moreland Teachers Finish Final Year of Wipro Science Education Fellowship

San Jose, CA, October 1, 2021 -  The Moreland School District is proud to announce that six Moreland teachers were accepted to be a part of the Wipro Science Education Fellowship program that began in August 2020 at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education. This 2021/2022 school year is their second and last year in the program, and the last year of the Wipro grant. Baker teacher Sierra Vance, Country Lane teachers Chelsea Alvarez and Julie McKinley-Reed, Easterbrook Discovery Teachers Sarah Huggins and Stephanie Yue, and Moreland Middle School teacher Nick Guttudauro were six of 20 science teachers chosen in the Bay Area after a rigorous selection process.   Wipro Limited is a leading global information technology, consulting, and business process services company. Started in 2012, the Wipro Science Education Fellowship is a multi-year program, which aims to nurture excellence in science education in public school systems through teacher training.

The Wipro Science Education Fellowship program builds on the teaching experience of the selected educators strengthening leadership skills and rigor within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines by leveraging expert research practices from participating universities.  This multi-year program, with a stipend funded by Wipro Limited, includes 250 hours of development training with distinguished University professors.

Each teacher continues to teach in their respective school and also collaborates with local communities and other interested teachers throughout the program.  The program aims to bring out leadership, reflective practices and professional development among the participating teachers. At the end of the multi-year program, participants will continue as part of the STEM Urban Learning & Leadership Community, an advocacy group for STEM learning among urban students.

The Wipro Science Education Fellowship is in its ninth year of the program and has trained more than 200 educators in more than 20 school districts throughout the country.  The first cohort selected Moreland teachers Michelle Sutton (Moreland Middle School, 6th-grade) and Shane McDonough (Moreland Middle School, 7th-grade teacher) for this unique opportunity and honor; the second cohort selected Joanne Endo (Baker Elementary School, 5th-grade teacher), Satomi Fujikawa (Country Lane, 3rd-grade teacher), and Eric Armann (Moreland Middle School, 7th-grade teacher).
